Pictures from the most beautiful place in the world

Walter Womacka came to Loddin for the first time in April 1961. He fell in love with the historic village and the unspoiled landscape, where the reed-covered Achterwasser, the tall beech trees of the coastal forest, the wide white sandy beach and the sea formed a harmonious whole. He took his first pictures of the village of Loddin with its blossoming fruit trees, the melle and the sea.
Through the mediation of Otto Niemeyer-Holstein, the opportunity arose to acquire a plot of land with a wide view over the Achterwasser. Construction work began in the fall of that year, and later a studio was also built. In contrast to the stressful everyday life in Berlin, Walter Womacka was able to recharge his batteries here and work in peace. He made good contact with people thanks to his approachable and friendly manner. Farmers and fishermen became the subject of his paintings, and conversations created trust and understanding for his work.
Over the course of more than 40 years, he created numerous works in Loddin depicting the life and work of the people living here, as well as countless landscape and flower paintings. They show Womacka's attachment to Usedom and made this region and its inhabitants known in many parts of the world - at exhibitions or as reproductions with wide distribution.
Walter Womacka traveled all over the world during his life as an artist, exhibiting in many countries in Europe, Asia and America. After each return, however, he came to appreciate and love the value and beauty of this part of the world. For him, there was "no more beautiful place in the world" than Loddin.
