Landolf Scherzer is one of the important voices from East Germany who has always reported on real life in everyday life in an alert manner
He has written over 30 books, including the gripping report "Catchers and Prisoners" (1983) about the hard life and work on a state-owned fishing trawler.
His most recent voyage of discovery took him to his neighboring village of Benshausen near Suhl. In the fall of 1994, Landolf Scherzer met Marianne Stracke in the Thuringian Slate Mountains. It was the beginning of a pen friendship and the start of a journey into the interior of his own country: The former LPG farmer, who explores the most beautiful hiking routes in the east for a western publishing house, wrote a history of her widely ramified Kämpf family, the tailors of Benshausen.
When she died in 2004, her son gave the writer more than 600 pages of letters, diaries and memories. Scherzer only sifted through the material twenty years later. He has never set off into the distance, searching all over the world for seeds of hope for a fairer society. In the collapse of utopias, he now discovers, at the age of 83, the everyday stories of a family of unheroic heroes.
"None of them," says Marianne, "were able to free themselves from the constraints of their time." But perhaps it is precisely in enduring the constraints and remaining human that a hidden strength lies, the great strength of the little people. In this way, Scherzer tells almost 150 years of German history through the stories of those who are not covered in any textbook.
