Prora

Prora is a district of the municipality of Ostseebad Binz on the island of Rügen and lies directly on the Baltic Sea coast in the Prorer Wiek. It combines nature and history like no other coastal resort.

The once grey «Colossus of Prora», planned in 1939 as a KdF (Power-through-joy Resort), now shines in new splendour over a length of 4.5 km. In addition to a youth hostel, luxury holiday flats and residential property, a museum mile has been created there with the NVA Museum, Oldtimer Museum, Rügen Toy and Doll Museum and a sand sculpture exhibition. The world's best sand artists present gigantic sand sculptures made of more than 9,000 tonnes of sand on an area of 4,000 m².

Not far from the sea and beach, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's first tree-top walk awaits its visitors. 1,250 metres high, the path of the Rügen Natural Heritage Centre winds its way to the gigantic treetops of the beech forest. It leads up a gentle incline to the "Eagle's Nest" at a height of 82 metres. Even prams and wheelchairs can make the ascent effortlessly. At eye level with the beech forest, you can enjoy the impressive view over the Bodden, the hilly country and the forests from the viewing platform.

Seemingly endless, the 40-hectare Flintstone Fields boulder field stretches into the landscape near the Baltic Sea coast at Prora. The natural monument lies on the other side of the road at the "Schmalen Heide" and can only be reached by a narrow footpath. Around 200 metres wide and 2 kilometres long, up to 14 stone ramparts lie there one after the other. Some of them are up to 25 metres wide and one metre high. Presumably, the stones were gradually washed out of Jasmund's chalk coast and then carried here by a series of storm tides or currents.

Since the extension of the beach promenade from Binz to Prora, more and more holidaymakers are discovering the qualities of this holiday offer in the north of the Baltic Sea resort.
